Captain was occupied with computing fuel and ETA for destination. Altitude alert chimed at FL292.5 in accordance with system specifications. Captain called 'descend.' first officer disconnected autoplt and leveled aircraft at FL290. Peak altitude attained was FL294 for less than 3 seconds. After leveloff at FL290, ATC called to direct aircraft back to assigned altitude. Reported compliance. No further incident.
