Narrative:
Level at 6000 ft MSL on STAR into xyz was advised of VFR traffic at 12 O'clock position and 5500 ft and climbing opposite direction, we were in the base of broken layer of clouds at approximately 5600-5800 ft MSL TCASII showed a TA target at 12 O'clock at 5600 ft MSL and climbing. A visual search could not locate traffic. An RA to 'climb' sounded and the first officer initiated promptly a climb at 6400 ft MSL. The TCASII issued a 'clear of conflict' and shown the target had passed below at 5800 ft MSL and climbing. We then notified approach of the RA and descended back to 6000 ft to resume the STAR. No visual contact was ever made with VFR traffic.
