Narrative:
Followed instructions of ground controller to proceed to runway 14. Held short and reported to ground controller I was at runway 14. Instructed by ground to contact tower. Contacted tower and was instructed by tower to take position on runway 14 and hold '...beware of wake turbulence from departing C130.' began to take position on runway 14, but before I could turn to face plane down the runway, propeller blast from the nearby departing C130 blew my plane over. Came to rest on left wheel/nosewheel and wingtip. Propeller tip touched runway as engine idled. Damaged required propeller replacement. I entered runway 14 from the north end of taxiway a (east) and the C130 entered from the other side and the intersection to the south(north). In hindsight, it is apparent that the distance between the C130 and my piper tri-pacer was too close for me to take position and hold on runway 14. To prevent a recurrence, I recommend improved training of tower personnel in the potential dangers of propeller blast from large cargo planes to light GA aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LIGHT ACFT ENCOUNTERS PROP WASH FROM C130 AND TIPS ONTO WINGTIP AND PROP.
Narrative: FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS OF GND CTLR TO PROCEED TO RWY 14. HELD SHORT AND RPTED TO GND CTLR I WAS AT RWY 14. INSTRUCTED BY GND TO CONTACT TWR. CONTACTED TWR AND WAS INSTRUCTED BY TWR TO TAKE POS ON RWY 14 AND HOLD '...BEWARE OF WAKE TURB FROM DEPARTING C130.' BEGAN TO TAKE POS ON RWY 14, BUT BEFORE I COULD TURN TO FACE PLANE DOWN THE RWY, PROP BLAST FROM THE NEARBY DEPARTING C130 BLEW MY PLANE OVER. CAME TO REST ON L WHEEL/NOSEWHEEL AND WINGTIP. PROP TIP TOUCHED RWY AS ENG IDLED. DAMAGED REQUIRED PROP REPLACEMENT. I ENTERED RWY 14 FROM THE N END OF TXWY A (E) AND THE C130 ENTERED FROM THE OTHER SIDE AND THE INTXN TO THE S(N). IN HINDSIGHT, IT IS APPARENT THAT THE DISTANCE BTWN THE C130 AND MY PIPER TRI-PACER WAS TOO CLOSE FOR ME TO TAKE POS AND HOLD ON RWY 14. TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE, I RECOMMEND IMPROVED TRAINING OF TWR PERSONNEL IN THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF PROP BLAST FROM LARGE CARGO PLANES TO LIGHT GA ACFT.
