Narrative:
Was climbing out of sjc off runway 29, headed for rhv. At about 1000 ft on upwind leg, asked controller if I could make right turn for rhv. Did not receive a reply but proceeded with the turn, and headed out for rhv. On return, while taxiing back to parking, ground asked me to call tower after parking. Tower then informed me that they had asked me to make a left downwind departure and that my right turn had taken me across the flight path of a B737 taking off from runway 30L. Due to relative inexperience, I misunderstood/did not properly hear this message. Will be more careful in future while communicating with ATC, especially while entering/departing airspace of busy airports.
