Narrative:
Received clearance to depart phx via pre departure clearance. Noted a revised segment on pre departure clearance printout. Revised segment was st johns 2 departure. We were cleared the eagul 3 departure. We left phx and flew the eagul 3 departure. Departure control asked us what departure we were on and we said eagul 3. He said we were supposed to be on st john 2. I found the wording and presentation of the revised segment on the pre departure clearance to be confusing. I understood the clearance to mean our departure had been changed from the st john 2 to the eagul 3, when in fact it meant just the opposite. The wording of any departure change needs to be much clearer. An example would be: change departure to XXXX or change route to XXX. When you print revised segment, and then put the departure or route right after those words, it seems to me that the listed route or segment is the part that is being changed to a new route, not that it is actually the new route itself. I have asked numerous other pilots and they also think the wording and presentation of a revised segment to be confusing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN AIRBUS A320 FOLLOWED THE WRONG SID DEP DUE TO INTERP OF THE PDC AMENDMENT.
Narrative: RECEIVED CLRNC TO DEPART PHX VIA PDC. NOTED A REVISED SEGMENT ON PDC PRINTOUT. REVISED SEGMENT WAS ST JOHNS 2 DEP. WE WERE CLRED THE EAGUL 3 DEP. WE LEFT PHX AND FLEW THE EAGUL 3 DEP. DEP CTL ASKED US WHAT DEP WE WERE ON AND WE SAID EAGUL 3. HE SAID WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ON ST JOHN 2. I FOUND THE WORDING AND PRESENTATION OF THE REVISED SEGMENT ON THE PDC TO BE CONFUSING. I UNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC TO MEAN OUR DEP HAD BEEN CHANGED FROM THE ST JOHN 2 TO THE EAGUL 3, WHEN IN FACT IT MEANT JUST THE OPPOSITE. THE WORDING OF ANY DEP CHANGE NEEDS TO BE MUCH CLEARER. AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE: CHANGE DEP TO XXXX OR CHANGE RTE TO XXX. WHEN YOU PRINT REVISED SEGMENT, AND THEN PUT THE DEP OR RTE RIGHT AFTER THOSE WORDS, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE LISTED RTE OR SEGMENT IS THE PART THAT IS BEING CHANGED TO A NEW RTE, NOT THAT IT IS ACTUALLY THE NEW RTE ITSELF. I HAVE ASKED NUMEROUS OTHER PLTS AND THEY ALSO THINK THE WORDING AND PRESENTATION OF A REVISED SEGMENT TO BE CONFUSING.
