Narrative:
En route from 4SD to rhv, realized it was IFR in bay area (I was VFR on top), reprogrammed the GPS for sjc and tried to raise ATC while on autoplt. While trying to troubleshoot my inability to reach ATC (proved to be a headphone problem) the autoplt carried me into the class B airspace before I had a clearance. Additionally, I waited too long to contact ATC, preparing in the pre-dawn, to obtain an approach clearance rather than a more involved en route to approach clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C320E PLT ENTERS THE CLASS B OF O90 WITHOUT CLRNC WHILE 8 MI FROM SJC, CA.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM 4SD TO RHV, REALIZED IT WAS IFR IN BAY AREA (I WAS VFR ON TOP), REPROGRAMMED THE GPS FOR SJC AND TRIED TO RAISE ATC WHILE ON AUTOPLT. WHILE TRYING TO TROUBLESHOOT MY INABILITY TO REACH ATC (PROVED TO BE A HEADPHONE PROB) THE AUTOPLT CARRIED ME INTO THE CLASS B AIRSPACE BEFORE I HAD A CLRNC. ADDITIONALLY, I WAITED TOO LONG TO CONTACT ATC, PREPARING IN THE PRE-DAWN, TO OBTAIN AN APCH CLRNC RATHER THAN A MORE INVOLVED ENRTE TO APCH CLRNC.
