Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
ATC cleared flight to cross 30 mi northeast vuz at 10000 ft. Clearance was read back and confirmed. At 30 mi northeast vuz, controller on 127.30 informed crew that flight should be at 11000 ft. Controller informing was not the controller who issued clearance. No traffic conflict occurred. Supplemental information from acn 449280: descent on arrival into atl, ZTL cleared us to descend out of FL200 to (what I heard) 11000 ft. Captain failed to 'double point,' acknowledge the altitude. After leveling at 11000 ft and switching to approach control, approach controller asked what altitude we had leveled at -- said we should be at 12000 ft. Controller stated no conflict/loss of separation occurred. Stated we were ok and he was 'cool' with the problem. There were no distrs at the time I heard 'cleared to 11000 ft.' did not have time to go back to previous controller and check the 11000 ft clearance. Problem: captain didn't have the cleared altitude so he could confirm/compare the altitude with me. Solution: listen, confirm, coordinate and follow procedures for the 'double pointing' at the altitude selector window.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FK10 CREW AND CTLR HAD A DISPUTE OVER CLRED ALT.
Narrative: ATC CLRED FLT TO CROSS 30 MI NE VUZ AT 10000 FT. CLRNC WAS READ BACK AND CONFIRMED. AT 30 MI NE VUZ, CTLR ON 127.30 INFORMED CREW THAT FLT SHOULD BE AT 11000 FT. CTLR INFORMING WAS NOT THE CTLR WHO ISSUED CLRNC. NO TFC CONFLICT OCCURRED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 449280: DSCNT ON ARR INTO ATL, ZTL CLRED US TO DSND OUT OF FL200 TO (WHAT I HEARD) 11000 FT. CAPT FAILED TO 'DOUBLE POINT,' ACKNOWLEDGE THE ALT. AFTER LEVELING AT 11000 FT AND SWITCHING TO APCH CTL, APCH CTLR ASKED WHAT ALT WE HAD LEVELED AT -- SAID WE SHOULD BE AT 12000 FT. CTLR STATED NO CONFLICT/LOSS OF SEPARATION OCCURRED. STATED WE WERE OK AND HE WAS 'COOL' WITH THE PROB. THERE WERE NO DISTRS AT THE TIME I HEARD 'CLRED TO 11000 FT.' DID NOT HAVE TIME TO GO BACK TO PREVIOUS CTLR AND CHK THE 11000 FT CLRNC. PROB: CAPT DIDN'T HAVE THE CLRED ALT SO HE COULD CONFIRM/COMPARE THE ALT WITH ME. SOLUTION: LISTEN, CONFIRM, COORDINATE AND FOLLOW PROCS FOR THE 'DOUBLE POINTING' AT THE ALT SELECTOR WINDOW.
