Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff, burning rubber type fumes were encountered in both the cockpit and cabin. We declared an emergency and made an immediate return to the nearest available runway at slc. During the approach the fumes disappeared and on landing no smoke was observed from the exterior of the aircraft. We taxied to the gate without further incident.
