Narrative:
During descent into key west, the #1 engine failed. The precautionary engine shutdown checklist was carried out but the propeller failed to feather when the condition lever was set to feather. #1 propeller RPM approximately 70%. Selecting #1 electric feather switch to feather successfully feathered the propeller. The WX at eyw was poor with heavy showers and winds gusting to 40 KTS, so we elected to turn back to ft myers as it was the nearest suitable airport. An emergency was declared, the passenger and flight attendant notified and the flight arrived at ft myers without further incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine was a P&west PW118A and maintenance reported the tower shaft had failed. The reporter said the propeller was feathered using the backup electric pump.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN EMBRAER 120 ON DSCNT AT 15000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #1 ENG LOSS OF PWR CAUSED BY A FAILED TOWER SHAFT.
Narrative: DURING DSCNT INTO KEY WEST, THE #1 ENG FAILED. THE PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN CHKLIST WAS CARRIED OUT BUT THE PROP FAILED TO FEATHER WHEN THE CONDITION LEVER WAS SET TO FEATHER. #1 PROP RPM APPROX 70%. SELECTING #1 ELECTRIC FEATHER SWITCH TO FEATHER SUCCESSFULLY FEATHERED THE PROP. THE WX AT EYW WAS POOR WITH HVY SHOWERS AND WINDS GUSTING TO 40 KTS, SO WE ELECTED TO TURN BACK TO FT MYERS AS IT WAS THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT. AN EMER WAS DECLARED, THE PAX AND FLT ATTENDANT NOTIFIED AND THE FLT ARRIVED AT FT MYERS WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS A P&W PW118A AND MAINT RPTED THE TOWER SHAFT HAD FAILED. THE RPTR SAID THE PROP WAS FEATHERED USING THE BACKUP ELECTRIC PUMP.
