Narrative:
About XA00 I was approaching the washington-wilkes airport from the southwest. The wind was calm and there was no other traffic reported, so I elected to land on runway 13. As I lined up with the runway and began my prelndg checklist, I was totally surprised when I met an aircraft leaving the airport from runway 31. There had been no indication of other traffic in the vicinity. I had called in and reported my position and intention, but the other aircraft was either not using a radio or was using the wrong frequency. The FBO said he was unaware of the other plane's presence. The encounter upset me and diverted my attention. I simply failed to get the landing gear down. I touched down smoothly and skidded for perhaps 75 ft with no injury to myself and seemingly minor damage to the airplane. No other person was aboard.

Title: PVT PLT OF A LOW WING SEL ACFT BECAME DISTR WHEN LINING UP TO LAND BY ANOTHER ACFT DEPARTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND FORGOT TO EXTEND THE LNDG GEAR.
Narrative: ABOUT XA00 I WAS APCHING THE WASHINGTON-WILKES ARPT FROM THE SW. THE WIND WAS CALM AND THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC RPTED, SO I ELECTED TO LAND ON RWY 13. AS I LINED UP WITH THE RWY AND BEGAN MY PRELNDG CHKLIST, I WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED WHEN I MET AN ACFT LEAVING THE ARPT FROM RWY 31. THERE HAD BEEN NO INDICATION OF OTHER TFC IN THE VICINITY. I HAD CALLED IN AND RPTED MY POS AND INTENTION, BUT THE OTHER ACFT WAS EITHER NOT USING A RADIO OR WAS USING THE WRONG FREQ. THE FBO SAID HE WAS UNAWARE OF THE OTHER PLANE'S PRESENCE. THE ENCOUNTER UPSET ME AND DIVERTED MY ATTN. I SIMPLY FAILED TO GET THE LNDG GEAR DOWN. I TOUCHED DOWN SMOOTHLY AND SKIDDED FOR PERHAPS 75 FT WITH NO INJURY TO MYSELF AND SEEMINGLY MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE. NO OTHER PERSON WAS ABOARD.
