Narrative:
As we approached the FAF to runway 8 we were handed off to bur tower. Tower advised us to slow to our final approach speed since aircraft Y was going around and we would be following them. As we got closer tower asked if we had aircraft X in sight at our 1 O'clock position on a right base. Since both of us did not have the traffic, I replied that we did not have the traffic in sight. We were now cleared for a visual approach to runway 15. The captain turned to a heading of 030 degrees, leveled off around 2700 ft MSL and set up a right base for runway 15. Tower then rescinded the runway 15 clearance and issued a clearance approach back to runway 8 and asked for 2 left turns and to reenter final approach, which we did. No TA, RA's or conflicts were encountered but we did a 360 degree turn over van nuys airport traffic pattern which seemed somewhat hazardous. I question the safety in the priority of the 'missed approach' aircraft Y being cleared in front of us and requiring the subsequent changes in runway approach and landing clrncs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BOEING 737-400 FLC QUESTIONS THE SAFETY OF A RWY REASSIGNMENT WHICH REQUIRED USE OF VNY AIRSPACE ON APCH TO BUR TO ACCOMMODATE A MISSED APCH ACFT.
Narrative: AS WE APCHED THE FAF TO RWY 8 WE WERE HANDED OFF TO BUR TWR. TWR ADVISED US TO SLOW TO OUR FINAL APCH SPD SINCE ACFT Y WAS GOING AROUND AND WE WOULD BE FOLLOWING THEM. AS WE GOT CLOSER TWR ASKED IF WE HAD ACFT X IN SIGHT AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS ON A R BASE. SINCE BOTH OF US DID NOT HAVE THE TFC, I REPLIED THAT WE DID NOT HAVE THE TFC IN SIGHT. WE WERE NOW CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 15. THE CAPT TURNED TO A HEADING OF 030 DEGS, LEVELED OFF AROUND 2700 FT MSL AND SET UP A R BASE FOR RWY 15. TWR THEN RESCINDED THE RWY 15 CLRNC AND ISSUED A CLRNC APCH BACK TO RWY 8 AND ASKED FOR 2 L TURNS AND TO REENTER FINAL APCH, WHICH WE DID. NO TA, RA'S OR CONFLICTS WERE ENCOUNTERED BUT WE DID A 360 DEG TURN OVER VAN NUYS ARPT TFC PATTERN WHICH SEEMED SOMEWHAT HAZARDOUS. I QUESTION THE SAFETY IN THE PRIORITY OF THE 'MISSED APCH' ACFT Y BEING CLRED IN FRONT OF US AND REQUIRING THE SUBSEQUENT CHANGES IN RWY APCH AND LNDG CLRNCS.
