Narrative:
I checked out a CFI applicant in spin training as a favor for another CFI. The student looked rather heavy but we were using a C172 with low fuel and I was sure we would be ok. The lesson was exciting but uneventful. After the flight, I did a weight and balance and found that while we were on the utility category we were out of the envelope for the front seat. Cause: when asked to check out the student CFI there were several other people present. Peer pressure, ego, and not wanting to embarrass the student overcame my common sense. Prevention: if there is any doubt, do a weight and balance first.
