Narrative:
Misprogrammed the route in the FMS. Controller called our attention to this and cleared us direct, then as filed. We made the correction and had no further incident. There were no conflicts that we know of. Both pilots doublechking the route in the FMS would have prevented the situation. Supplemental information from acn 451640: I am new to the B737-400 coming over from the B737-200. I got busy during the ground phase and did not check his work thinking he had been on it for yrs. My lesson is: even though someone has a lot of experience they can still make a mistake. I will check all FMC entries from now on.
