Narrative:
Had accomplished a low speed abort, taxied clear of active and cleared to hold short of runway 4L. I told captain he had radios to make an announcement to calm the passenger and to talk to company for gate assignment. Don't remember if I acknowledged the 'hold short' or the if the captain did. When done with other duties, looked up and we were crossing runway 4L (had heard some part of captain's talking to ATC while on PA) and I switched to ground thinking he had gotten clearance to cross. Ground informed us we had not been cleared to cross, but 'no problem' because there had been no traffic.
