Narrative:
Climbing out of stl, controller turned us direct pia and thought climb to 15000 ft. At 7800 ft, controller asked altitude then reclred us to 15000 ft. Altitude alerter set to 6000 ft. Altitude alerter placarded inoperative.

Narrative: CLBING OUT OF STL, CTLR TURNED US DIRECT PIA AND THOUGHT CLB TO 15000 FT. AT 7800 FT, CTLR ASKED ALT THEN RECLRED US TO 15000 FT. ALT ALERTER SET TO 6000 FT. ALT ALERTER PLACARDED INOP.
