Narrative:
We had flown the ILS approach to livermore with a missed, to the holding pattern as a refresher flight. We had originally filed IFR and accepted an IFR clearance. While approaching reiga intersection for the first holding pattern, the PF (under the hood) and myself were discussing what the best way to set up the HSI and #2 VOR would be for entering the holding pattern. Approach control called and asked our altitude. We were at 4000 ft MSL, but we were cleared to 3300 ft. We immediately descended back to 3300 ft. The controller acted very irritated. Next time we go out for a refresher, we could avoid this by being more current in altitude holding. Maybe not filing IFR could have helped also.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A SEL SMA CLBED ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT DURING REFRESHER PRACTICE OF AN INST HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: WE HAD FLOWN THE ILS APCH TO LIVERMORE WITH A MISSED, TO THE HOLDING PATTERN AS A REFRESHER FLT. WE HAD ORIGINALLY FILED IFR AND ACCEPTED AN IFR CLRNC. WHILE APCHING REIGA INTXN FOR THE FIRST HOLDING PATTERN, THE PF (UNDER THE HOOD) AND MYSELF WERE DISCUSSING WHAT THE BEST WAY TO SET UP THE HSI AND #2 VOR WOULD BE FOR ENTERING THE HOLDING PATTERN. APCH CTL CALLED AND ASKED OUR ALT. WE WERE AT 4000 FT MSL, BUT WE WERE CLRED TO 3300 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY DSNDED BACK TO 3300 FT. THE CTLR ACTED VERY IRRITATED. NEXT TIME WE GO OUT FOR A REFRESHER, WE COULD AVOID THIS BY BEING MORE CURRENT IN ALT HOLDING. MAYBE NOT FILING IFR COULD HAVE HELPED ALSO.
