Narrative:
During landing rollout on runway 13L at jfk, tower requested we 'keep speed up and take second taxiway to the right at taxiway za.' at the time, we were passing taxiway D. I did go to the second taxiway. I saw a sign there labeled 'za' pointing to the right and exited. Unfortunately, it was taxiway east. The tower was very upset since we then had to stop for an aircraft on taxiway B and there was not enough room to clear the runway. They even had us call them back from ground control to berate us for almost causing a go around. Contributing factors were: when we got the clearance during rollout, I was experiencing only 1 engine going into reverse. The clearance itself was confusing since taxiway east was the second taxiway. The signs were close enough together to mislead me at a time when I was very busy. To the copilot's credit, he pointed out I was making an error as I turned, but I had already committed to the turn when he realized I was turning onto the wrong taxiway. From now on, I will study the runway exits a little closer before landing.

Title: A B767 CAPT RECEIVED CONFUSING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DURING A PROBLEMATIC LNDG ROLLOUT DURING WHICH ONLY 1 ENG WENT INTO REVERSE.
Narrative: DURING LNDG ROLLOUT ON RWY 13L AT JFK, TWR REQUESTED WE 'KEEP SPD UP AND TAKE SECOND TXWY TO THE R AT TXWY ZA.' AT THE TIME, WE WERE PASSING TXWY D. I DID GO TO THE SECOND TXWY. I SAW A SIGN THERE LABELED 'ZA' POINTING TO THE R AND EXITED. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS TXWY E. THE TWR WAS VERY UPSET SINCE WE THEN HAD TO STOP FOR AN ACFT ON TXWY B AND THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO CLR THE RWY. THEY EVEN HAD US CALL THEM BACK FROM GND CTL TO BERATE US FOR ALMOST CAUSING A GAR. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE: WHEN WE GOT THE CLRNC DURING ROLLOUT, I WAS EXPERIENCING ONLY 1 ENG GOING INTO REVERSE. THE CLRNC ITSELF WAS CONFUSING SINCE TXWY E WAS THE SECOND TXWY. THE SIGNS WERE CLOSE ENOUGH TOGETHER TO MISLEAD ME AT A TIME WHEN I WAS VERY BUSY. TO THE COPLT'S CREDIT, HE POINTED OUT I WAS MAKING AN ERROR AS I TURNED, BUT I HAD ALREADY COMMITTED TO THE TURN WHEN HE REALIZED I WAS TURNING ONTO THE WRONG TXWY. FROM NOW ON, I WILL STUDY THE RWY EXITS A LITTLE CLOSER BEFORE LNDG.
