Narrative:

The other aircraft pilot may not have been aware of his position/altitude and/or may have operated at other than published pattern altitude. The situation could have been avoided if the other pilot had communicated position and intentions over CTAF allowing earlier visual contact. The other pilot could have located my aircraft visually simply monitoring CTAF for announcements of position and intentions. The situation took place just beyond my mid field crossing from east to west, just prior to my entering downwind to runway 36. The other aircraft was sbound, as if approximating a downwind, or possibly a north to south flyover.
