Narrative:

On mia approach, downwind runway 9L, heading 240 degrees, given clearance to descend from 8000 ft to 6000 ft. Passing 7200 ft, received TCASII TA followed immediately by TCASII RA commanding a 1500 FPM climb or greater. First officer followed TCASII instructions. At 8100 ft, 'climb' RA became 'monitor vertical speed' RA. Shortly afterwards, clear of conflict was received. We never made visual contact with the other aircraft. Also, we never received any TA from ATC until we told them that we were responding to the RA. The other aircraft appeared to pass within 1-2 mi on TCASII and minimum vertical separation was 300 ft. After our inquiry, approach did acknowledge other aircraft, but he did not seem to be concerned. Approach and landing were normal afterwards.
