Narrative:
I was on a visual approach to jhm and descending out of 7000 ft when traffic was issued to me at 12 O'clock 5 mi. This aircraft was a C402 of a local airline, he was at 6500 ft in cruise. Neither of us could see each other. Traffic again issued at 12 O'clock 3 mi. At this time I was at 6700 ft and knowing that a conflict was less than 1 min away, I stopped my descent voluntarily, so I would not have a midair collision. My intent was to pass over him and begin evasive action to the right (south). Just as I thought that, the C402 pilot stated he was deviating to the right (north). I then stated that I was also deviating to my right (south). These actions resolved the conflict. But I think the controller felt he would get in trouble so he lashed out on the air, asking me why I stopped my descent. I think he planned on me passing under the traffic when really I would have passed him at the same altitude. In retrospect, I should have asked the controller for a vector sooner. The other aircraft was VFR so there was no violation (I don't think so at least) but it became a little dangerous nonetheless.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A COMMERCIAL RATED PLT FLYING A C208 NEAR MKK, HI, MANEUVERED HIS ACFT TO AVOID A PERCEIVED THREAT FROM ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: I WAS ON A VISUAL APCH TO JHM AND DSNDING OUT OF 7000 FT WHEN TFC WAS ISSUED TO ME AT 12 O'CLOCK 5 MI. THIS ACFT WAS A C402 OF A LCL AIRLINE, HE WAS AT 6500 FT IN CRUISE. NEITHER OF US COULD SEE EACH OTHER. TFC AGAIN ISSUED AT 12 O'CLOCK 3 MI. AT THIS TIME I WAS AT 6700 FT AND KNOWING THAT A CONFLICT WAS LESS THAN 1 MIN AWAY, I STOPPED MY DSCNT VOLUNTARILY, SO I WOULD NOT HAVE A MIDAIR COLLISION. MY INTENT WAS TO PASS OVER HIM AND BEGIN EVASIVE ACTION TO THE R (S). JUST AS I THOUGHT THAT, THE C402 PLT STATED HE WAS DEVIATING TO THE R (N). I THEN STATED THAT I WAS ALSO DEVIATING TO MY R (S). THESE ACTIONS RESOLVED THE CONFLICT. BUT I THINK THE CTLR FELT HE WOULD GET IN TROUBLE SO HE LASHED OUT ON THE AIR, ASKING ME WHY I STOPPED MY DSCNT. I THINK HE PLANNED ON ME PASSING UNDER THE TFC WHEN REALLY I WOULD HAVE PASSED HIM AT THE SAME ALT. IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE CTLR FOR A VECTOR SOONER. THE OTHER ACFT WAS VFR SO THERE WAS NO VIOLATION (I DON'T THINK SO AT LEAST) BUT IT BECAME A LITTLE DANGEROUS NONETHELESS.
