Narrative:
On a flight from olive branch, ms, to heber springs, ar. On climb out, the controller asked me for my on course heading. I was filed and cleared to zivny, V124 tafte. I told him my heading on course for direct heber springs. He cleared me on my heading of 287 degrees. Subsequently, he steered me to a heading of 270 degrees to exit the western mem gate. He then cleared me back on course. I again took up a direct heading to heber, still mistakenly thinking I was cleared direct heber. The on course heading and course would have been 241 degrees to intercept V124 southwest of mem en route to traffic (as I was filed). He called and asked me how I had been cleared. We talked and discovered I had not been cleared direct to heber springs. He then did clear me direct and stated no conflicts had arisen. He just didn't know where I had gotten the idea that I had been cleared direct. I apologized for my confusion. It was my fault for assuming the direct to heber clearance. In the past, I had asked for direct to heber after taking off and had always been approved. When he asked for my on course heading, I wrongly assumed he cleared me at that time direct to heber springs.

Title: PIPER COMANCHE INCORRECTLY FLIES A DIRECT COURSE TO DEST AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING CLRNC ON VICTOR AIRWAYS.
Narrative: ON A FLT FROM OLIVE BRANCH, MS, TO HEBER SPRINGS, AR. ON CLBOUT, THE CTLR ASKED ME FOR MY ON COURSE HDG. I WAS FILED AND CLRED TO ZIVNY, V124 TAFTE. I TOLD HIM MY HDG ON COURSE FOR DIRECT HEBER SPRINGS. HE CLRED ME ON MY HDG OF 287 DEGS. SUBSEQUENTLY, HE STEERED ME TO A HDG OF 270 DEGS TO EXIT THE WESTERN MEM GATE. HE THEN CLRED ME BACK ON COURSE. I AGAIN TOOK UP A DIRECT HDG TO HEBER, STILL MISTAKENLY THINKING I WAS CLRED DIRECT HEBER. THE ON COURSE HDG AND COURSE WOULD HAVE BEEN 241 DEGS TO INTERCEPT V124 SW OF MEM ENRTE TO TFC (AS I WAS FILED). HE CALLED AND ASKED ME HOW I HAD BEEN CLRED. WE TALKED AND DISCOVERED I HAD NOT BEEN CLRED DIRECT TO HEBER SPRINGS. HE THEN DID CLR ME DIRECT AND STATED NO CONFLICTS HAD ARISEN. HE JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHERE I HAD GOTTEN THE IDEA THAT I HAD BEEN CLRED DIRECT. I APOLOGIZED FOR MY CONFUSION. IT WAS MY FAULT FOR ASSUMING THE DIRECT TO HEBER CLRNC. IN THE PAST, I HAD ASKED FOR DIRECT TO HEBER AFTER TAKING OFF AND HAD ALWAYS BEEN APPROVED. WHEN HE ASKED FOR MY ON COURSE HDG, I WRONGLY ASSUMED HE CLRED ME AT THAT TIME DIRECT TO HEBER SPRINGS.
