Narrative:
ZLA descending aircraft X. Controller descending aircraft in between traffic. 'Best forward speed, descend this fix at xxxxx altitude, descend 50 mi northeast of this fix xxxxx by xxxxx.' pilots have to find fixes on maps, locate mi on FMS, and insert to aid in making crossing restrs. Local controllers know the area in which they work by heart. Pilots have to find fixes, etc, on maps while flying aircraft. Controller asked us twice if we could make crossing fix, when we just located it on the map. We started descent at maximum speed but advised that we/aircraft could not make crossing restr. Controller was upset but gave us a turn to avoid airspace problem. What is going on with descent lanes? Why are we weaving in and out of other traffic to get down? We had a STAR planned and programmed in the FMC.

Title: ACR COMPLAINS OF LOS ANGELES CTR'S LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT TAKES TO HAVE A CLRNC CHANGE AFTER THE ORIGINAL ARR PLAN IS MADE.
Narrative: ZLA DSNDING ACFT X. CTLR DSNDING ACFT IN BTWN TFC. 'BEST FORWARD SPD, DSND THIS FIX AT XXXXX ALT, DSND 50 MI NE OF THIS FIX XXXXX BY XXXXX.' PLTS HAVE TO FIND FIXES ON MAPS, LOCATE MI ON FMS, AND INSERT TO AID IN MAKING XING RESTRS. LCL CTLRS KNOW THE AREA IN WHICH THEY WORK BY HEART. PLTS HAVE TO FIND FIXES, ETC, ON MAPS WHILE FLYING ACFT. CTLR ASKED US TWICE IF WE COULD MAKE XING FIX, WHEN WE JUST LOCATED IT ON THE MAP. WE STARTED DSCNT AT MAX SPD BUT ADVISED THAT WE/ACFT COULD NOT MAKE XING RESTR. CTLR WAS UPSET BUT GAVE US A TURN TO AVOID AIRSPACE PROB. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DSCNT LANES? WHY ARE WE WEAVING IN AND OUT OF OTHER TFC TO GET DOWN? WE HAD A STAR PLANNED AND PROGRAMMED IN THE FMC.
