Narrative:
Far part 121 air carrier operates domestic, flag, and supplemental. Redispatch flight plan was provided to maximize payload on freighter from ebos to jfk (oostende, belgium to new york) with initial release to gander. Planned redispatch point 'steam.' due to low qnh at ebos coordinated less than 'jfk' planned fuel but more than 'cyzx gander' due to maximum takeoff gross weight limit by climb with in-flight reanalysis to continue to jfk. In-flight redispatch was planned with no alternate due to good WX at destination (jfk). Captain accepted redispatch with what appeared to be satisfactory fuel reserves and good forecast WX. However, after passing 'steam,' captain noticed that original flight release was 'instrument nonscheduled.' this means, it appears, an alternate and fuel to alternate should have been included as part of the redispatch. Notified company via phone patch on commercial radio and coordinated a legal rerelease. Flight continued to jfk without incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B747-100 CARGO ACFT, ON AN INTL FLT, NOTICED THAT THE ORIGINAL DISPATCH SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED A DESIGNATED ALTERNATE ARPT, WITH CORRESPONDING FUEL, EVEN THOUGH THE DEST WX FORECAST DID NOT REQUIRE THE ALTERNATE.
Narrative: FAR PART 121 ACR OPERATES DOMESTIC, FLAG, AND SUPPLEMENTAL. REDISPATCH FLT PLAN WAS PROVIDED TO MAXIMIZE PAYLOAD ON FREIGHTER FROM EBOS TO JFK (OOSTENDE, BELGIUM TO NEW YORK) WITH INITIAL RELEASE TO GANDER. PLANNED REDISPATCH POINT 'STEAM.' DUE TO LOW QNH AT EBOS COORDINATED LESS THAN 'JFK' PLANNED FUEL BUT MORE THAN 'CYZX GANDER' DUE TO MAX TKOF GROSS WT LIMIT BY CLB WITH INFLT REANALYSIS TO CONTINUE TO JFK. INFLT REDISPATCH WAS PLANNED WITH NO ALTERNATE DUE TO GOOD WX AT DEST (JFK). CAPT ACCEPTED REDISPATCH WITH WHAT APPEARED TO BE SATISFACTORY FUEL RESERVES AND GOOD FORECAST WX. HOWEVER, AFTER PASSING 'STEAM,' CAPT NOTICED THAT ORIGINAL FLT RELEASE WAS 'INST NONSCHEDULED.' THIS MEANS, IT APPEARS, AN ALTERNATE AND FUEL TO ALTERNATE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED AS PART OF THE REDISPATCH. NOTIFIED COMPANY VIA PHONE PATCH ON COMMERCIAL RADIO AND COORDINATED A LEGAL RERELEASE. FLT CONTINUED TO JFK WITHOUT INCIDENT.
