Narrative:
Winds were 030 degrees at 18 KTS for landing. Very smooth touchdown and on centerline. I kept adding in more aileron until I had full wheel throw. The captain assisted with nosewheel steering and we turned off on runway 28/10 and shut down. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a B727-200 and only the right main gear tires failed. The reporter said the crew made a rejected takeoff at the departure station between 80-100 KTS and allowed time for brake cooling before departing. The reporter stated no abnormal antiskid indications and the system operated normally. The reporter said maintenance has made no report of the cause of the #3 and #4 tire failure. The reporter said it may have been possible the tires were damaged on the rejected takeoff but the cause is so far unknown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727-200 ON LNDG HAD #3 AND #4 MAIN TIRES FAIL. CAUSE UNKNOWN.
Narrative: WINDS WERE 030 DEGS AT 18 KTS FOR LNDG. VERY SMOOTH TOUCHDOWN AND ON CTRLINE. I KEPT ADDING IN MORE AILERON UNTIL I HAD FULL WHEEL THROW. THE CAPT ASSISTED WITH NOSEWHEEL STEERING AND WE TURNED OFF ON RWY 28/10 AND SHUT DOWN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A B727-200 AND ONLY THE R MAIN GEAR TIRES FAILED. THE RPTR SAID THE CREW MADE A REJECTED TKOF AT THE DEP STATION BTWN 80-100 KTS AND ALLOWED TIME FOR BRAKE COOLING BEFORE DEPARTING. THE RPTR STATED NO ABNORMAL ANTISKID INDICATIONS AND THE SYS OPERATED NORMALLY. THE RPTR SAID MAINT HAS MADE NO RPT OF THE CAUSE OF THE #3 AND #4 TIRE FAILURE. THE RPTR SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE THE TIRES WERE DAMAGED ON THE REJECTED TKOF BUT THE CAUSE IS SO FAR UNKNOWN.
