Narrative:

In night IMC, the aircraft GPWS sounded a 'terrain' warning. Captain initiated an escape maneuver, and we immediately climbed the aircraft to an altitude of 16000 ft. Portland approach was notified. They assured us we were clear of terrain and reclred for descent. The flight continued into pdx without further incident.

Title: AN MD SUPER 80 ON DSCNT AT 13000 FT INITIATES AN ESCAPE MANEUVER DUE TO A GPWS 'TERRAIN' WARNING WHICH LATER PROVED TO BE A FALSE WARNING.

Narrative: IN NIGHT IMC, THE ACFT GPWS SOUNDED A 'TERRAIN' WARNING. CAPT INITIATED AN ESCAPE MANEUVER, AND WE IMMEDIATELY CLBED THE ACFT TO AN ALT OF 16000 FT. PORTLAND APCH WAS NOTIFIED. THEY ASSURED US WE WERE CLR OF TERRAIN AND RECLRED FOR DSCNT. THE FLT CONTINUED INTO PDX WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
