Narrative:
This aircraft xyz originally had a placard under MEL xx-yyb. When I first saw this MEL, I called maintenance technician and confirmed it was the correct placard and asked how many lights were inoperative. They assured me it was 1 light and the placard was correct. At departure time, the placard was changed from xx-yyb to xx-yya. It was changed without my approval and the initials used were the same for xx-yyb. I called technician and they told me the item was incorrectly placarded and he didn't think there was anything different in the MEL requirements. The crew caught the incorrect placard before departure.
