Narrative:
First officer made normal landing runway 32. During landing roll, first officer and I planned to turn left at the end of runway 32. ATC instructed us to 'turn right first available turn.' I was unsure of instructions (cockpit noise from engines in reverse). I requested ATC to 'verify right turn.' by this time we were rapidly approaching N4. The tower said 'right turn' as I recall. We tried but could not safely exit at N4. First officer told tower we would have to exit at the end of runway 32. Tower then instructed aircraft behind us to execute a go around. Supplemental information from acn 456928: during landing roll, I determined I was not going to make taxiway right, so I kept my speed up to expedite clearing the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-300 FLC FAILS TO MAKE AN EXPECTED TURN OFF OF RWY 32 AT PIT SO CTLR HAS TO SEND ANOTHER APCHING ACFT AROUND.
Narrative: FO MADE NORMAL LNDG RWY 32. DURING LNDG ROLL, FO AND I PLANNED TO TURN L AT THE END OF RWY 32. ATC INSTRUCTED US TO 'TURN R FIRST AVAILABLE TURN.' I WAS UNSURE OF INSTRUCTIONS (COCKPIT NOISE FROM ENGS IN REVERSE). I REQUESTED ATC TO 'VERIFY R TURN.' BY THIS TIME WE WERE RAPIDLY APCHING N4. THE TWR SAID 'R TURN' AS I RECALL. WE TRIED BUT COULD NOT SAFELY EXIT AT N4. FO TOLD TWR WE WOULD HAVE TO EXIT AT THE END OF RWY 32. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED ACFT BEHIND US TO EXECUTE A GAR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 456928: DURING LNDG ROLL, I DETERMINED I WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE TXWY R, SO I KEPT MY SPD UP TO EXPEDITE CLRING THE RWY.
