Narrative:

At the runway end we encountered a problem arming our autobrakes for takeoff. After several attempts to set the autobrakes to rejected takeoff for takeoff, we called company dispatch and asked them to phone patch us to B757 technical service for help. We discussed the problem with technical service and tried a few circuit breakers in an attempt to clear our problem. When we were unable to fix the autobrakes, we started discussing crew placarding. I told both technical service and dispatch that we could not arm the autobrakes and the EICAS message was on. Dispatch said that autobrakes were listed in the aircraft MEL. I was looking at my MEL and talking to both dispatch and technical service when I questioned the second part of the MEL where it said 'no' for crew placarding. Technical service told me that the 'M' in front of the paragraph meant it was for maintenance only. Both dispatch and technical service concurred that I could crew placard the autobrakes. After departing, I looked up the definition of 'M' in the front of the MEL. At this point, I realized that we should not have crew placarded the autobrakes.

Title: A B757 FLC DISCOVERED THAT COMPANY DISPATCH AND MAINT WERE WRONG IN ADVISING THEM TO PLACE AN MEL PLACARD ON INOP AUTOBRAKES RTO POS AT SJU.

Narrative: AT THE RWY END WE ENCOUNTERED A PROB ARMING OUR AUTOBRAKES FOR TKOF. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO SET THE AUTOBRAKES TO RTO FOR TKOF, WE CALLED COMPANY DISPATCH AND ASKED THEM TO PHONE PATCH US TO B757 TECHNICAL SVC FOR HELP. WE DISCUSSED THE PROB WITH TECHNICAL SVC AND TRIED A FEW CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLR OUR PROB. WHEN WE WERE UNABLE TO FIX THE AUTOBRAKES, WE STARTED DISCUSSING CREW PLACARDING. I TOLD BOTH TECHNICAL SVC AND DISPATCH THAT WE COULD NOT ARM THE AUTOBRAKES AND THE EICAS MESSAGE WAS ON. DISPATCH SAID THAT AUTOBRAKES WERE LISTED IN THE ACFT MEL. I WAS LOOKING AT MY MEL AND TALKING TO BOTH DISPATCH AND TECHNICAL SVC WHEN I QUESTIONED THE SECOND PART OF THE MEL WHERE IT SAID 'NO' FOR CREW PLACARDING. TECHNICAL SVC TOLD ME THAT THE 'M' IN FRONT OF THE PARAGRAPH MEANT IT WAS FOR MAINT ONLY. BOTH DISPATCH AND TECHNICAL SVC CONCURRED THAT I COULD CREW PLACARD THE AUTOBRAKES. AFTER DEPARTING, I LOOKED UP THE DEFINITION OF 'M' IN THE FRONT OF THE MEL. AT THIS POINT, I REALIZED THAT WE SHOULD NOT HAVE CREW PLACARDED THE AUTOBRAKES.
