Narrative:

While climbing under autoplt control, ATC assigned what both pilots believed to be FL270. Captain, flying, set FL270 in altitude alerter window. First officer read back altitude FL270 to controller and confirmed altitude setting in window. Passing FL267, controller queried our altitude and informed us FL260 was assigned. We returned to FL260 without conflict or incident. It is my opinion that controllers are paying less attention to readbacks now that they are not considered responsible for verification of readbacks.
