Narrative:
When selecting flaps 20 degrees during approach, the leading edge slat asymmetrical message displayed with associated amber leading edge light. We performed the checklist and returned for landing at lax. I decided to declare an emergency so the equipment would be standing by just in case. We landed with flaps 20 degrees with no other problems. In my concern to say good-bye to the passenger, I forgot to pull the cvr circuit breaker. I discussed the problem with maintenance but should also have called dispatch to inform them of the problem once on the ground, but failed to do so.
