Narrative:
Takeoff was to the south, first officer (relatively new) was flying. Controller gave us a turn at 1 DME, south of mem. First officer initiated turn before 1 DME. Controller turned us back, with no apparent conflict. Realize I have to watch new people closer.

Narrative: TKOF WAS TO THE S, FO (RELATIVELY NEW) WAS FLYING. CTLR GAVE US A TURN AT 1 DME, S OF MEM. FO INITIATED TURN BEFORE 1 DME. CTLR TURNED US BACK, WITH NO APPARENT CONFLICT. REALIZE I HAVE TO WATCH NEW PEOPLE CLOSER.
