Narrative:
Departure controller assigned best rate to 10000 ft -- 320 KTS at 10000 ft. As captain accelerated, we received RA to climb 2000 FPM due to traffic at our 9 O'clock position. Traffic closed to approximately 1.25 mi before passing behind us, 2500 ft below. Originally showed altitude difference of approximately 1500 ft. Advised departure controller of deviation from plan -- rest normal. Controller stated he thought our speed increase would separate us from B737 departure from midway. Good plan, but a little too ambitious. Following RA resulted in adequate separation and safety. Without it, separation would've been interesting.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD-S80 CREW RPTED RECEIVING A TCASII RA AFTER COMPLYING WITH A REQUEST FROM A C90 TRACON CTLR TO MAINTAIN BEST RATE UP TO 10000 FT. REVIEWING THE RA WITH THE CTLR REVEALED HIS PERCEPTION THAT HE THOUGHT AN MD-S80 COULD OUT RUN A B737.
Narrative: DEP CTLR ASSIGNED BEST RATE TO 10000 FT -- 320 KTS AT 10000 FT. AS CAPT ACCELERATED, WE RECEIVED RA TO CLB 2000 FPM DUE TO TFC AT OUR 9 O'CLOCK POS. TFC CLOSED TO APPROX 1.25 MI BEFORE PASSING BEHIND US, 2500 FT BELOW. ORIGINALLY SHOWED ALT DIFFERENCE OF APPROX 1500 FT. ADVISED DEP CTLR OF DEV FROM PLAN -- REST NORMAL. CTLR STATED HE THOUGHT OUR SPD INCREASE WOULD SEPARATE US FROM B737 DEP FROM MIDWAY. GOOD PLAN, BUT A LITTLE TOO AMBITIOUS. FOLLOWING RA RESULTED IN ADEQUATE SEPARATION AND SAFETY. WITHOUT IT, SEPARATION WOULD'VE BEEN INTERESTING.
