Narrative:
I was at sector 44 (shine) finishing up the push into clt. Took handoff on aircraft at FL240 near spa. Route was going right through clt departures and arrs. Problem #1: I didn't have south strip. Route read bfm.1.3044N/08744W. It seems as if many aircraft with latitudes/longitudes in their flight plans don't process properly. I turned aircraft around clt and traffic and descended him to 11000 ft. Aircraft asked for direct uvaxe for the GPS runway 24 to svh. I'm not that familiar with the approach (problem #2: positioning), so I went to look it up. Problem #3: no approach plates on the sector. When I finally found the approach plates (after visiting 2 sectors), I discovered uvaxe is 'not' an IAF, aldoh is. I cannot tell you how many times I've had aircraft ask for direct to a fix on a GPS approach that is not an IAF. This is a real problem (#4). Now I'm ready to clear direct aldoh except I don't know where it is in relation to clt airspace. Problem #5: the IAF's for GPS approachs are not displayed on the pvd's at ZTL. We rerte the aircraft to aldoh. Turns out it is 2 mi outside of clt approach airspace, requiring a pointout. We don't have time to do all this when we are busy. So most people don't. That's why I've been given a dozen airplanes going direct to fixes that aren't IAF's. It's called 'pass the trask.' let somebody else figure it out. It's not very conducive to a safe operation.
