Narrative:
I was just handed off to ZJX and reported in on 127.8 at about hevvn intersection. There was no response. The jpi engine monitor showed 11.3 for the battery and the cessna ammeter showed a discharge. I attempted to recycle the alternator switch to bring it back on line, but the alternator did not deliver. At that time I attempted to communicate with my hand-held radio, but I did not get a response on it. (Later found a defective wire.) then I squawked 7600. Soon after that the avionics shut down. Since I was in VMC, I decided to fly to the nearest airport that repairs could be made instead of staying on the IFR route which would lead me into tpa's class B airspace. After landing at ocf, the alternator was found to be defective and replaced. The part had 590 hours on it. As soon as I landed at ocf I called (via telephone) flight service and informed flight service of the fact that I was on an IFR flight plan and decided to divert because of loss of radio contact.

Title: A C182 COMMERCIAL PLT LOSES HIS ALTERNATOR AND DEVIATES TO OCF AFTER BEING UNABLE TO ESTABLISH RADIO CONTACT WITH ZJX, FL.
Narrative: I WAS JUST HANDED OFF TO ZJX AND RPTED IN ON 127.8 AT ABOUT HEVVN INTXN. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. THE JPI ENG MONITOR SHOWED 11.3 FOR THE BATTERY AND THE CESSNA AMMETER SHOWED A DISCHARGE. SINCE I WAS IN VMC, I DECIDED TO FLY TO THE NEAREST ARPT THAT REPAIRS COULD BE MADE INSTEAD OF STAYING ON THE IFR RTE WHICH WOULD LEAD ME INTO TPA'S CLASS B AIRSPACE. AFTER LNDG AT OCF, THE ALTERNATOR WAS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED. THE PART HAD 590 HRS ON IT. AS SOON AS I LANDED AT OCF I CALLED (VIA TELEPHONE) FLT SVC AND INFORMED FLT SVC OF THE FACT THAT I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN AND DECIDED TO DIVERT BECAUSE OF LOSS OF RADIO CONTACT.
