Narrative:
First officer witnessed the closing of L1 door by (I was told later) brand new ground personnel. The door was slammed shut on 2 attempts and all doors appeared to be closed (no EICAS message/door warning light). After rotation (runway 32), 'L1 door unsafe' message appeared on EICAS. Pilot action to maintain 3000 ft, 200 KTS, flaps 10 degrees. I requested an immediate turn on 240 degree heading to make left downwind for runway 6. My third crew member carefully inspected the door and noticed that handle was out of locked position by 1-2 inches. He then proceeded to close it properly and all messages disappeared. Flight was continued uneventfully. After landing, I wrote the aircraft up for a full inspection of the door. I also alerted the anc ground personnel manager to alert him about this incident to make sure that the doors be closed properly!
