Narrative:
The aircraft operator maintains computerized records, including installed component history. My inspection and return-to-service of these aircraft requires a review of records, including component history, to ensure that overhaul periods and life limits are not overflown. I accepted the computer printout of the component histories with only a random audit to verify accuracy. Recently the operator requested that I audit all items. I found 2 substantial errors on component histories of aircraft I have returned to service. 1) previous cycle history was entered in place of component hours (research found it entered correctly in 1996, later changed). 2) a sub-component was listed as having an overhaul instead of retirement life. The aircraft were removed from service, the components replaced and records corrected. The operator has set up a system for periodic audits by trained personnel, including comparing current computerized records with previous printouts to reveal unwarranted changes.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LEAD TECHNICIAN RPTS THAT DURING A COMPUTERIZED RECORD COMPONENT AUDIT ON A BELL 206 HELI TWO SUBSTANTIAL ERRORS WERE FOUND.
Narrative: THE ACFT OPERATOR MAINTAINS COMPUTERIZED RECORDS, INCLUDING INSTALLED COMPONENT HISTORY. MY INSPECTION AND RETURN-TO-SVC OF THESE ACFT REQUIRES A REVIEW OF RECORDS, INCLUDING COMPONENT HISTORY, TO ENSURE THAT OVERHAUL PERIODS AND LIFE LIMITS ARE NOT OVERFLOWN. I ACCEPTED THE COMPUTER PRINTOUT OF THE COMPONENT HISTORIES WITH ONLY A RANDOM AUDIT TO VERIFY ACCURACY. RECENTLY THE OPERATOR REQUESTED THAT I AUDIT ALL ITEMS. I FOUND 2 SUBSTANTIAL ERRORS ON COMPONENT HISTORIES OF ACFT I HAVE RETURNED TO SVC. 1) PREVIOUS CYCLE HISTORY WAS ENTERED IN PLACE OF COMPONENT HRS (RESEARCH FOUND IT ENTERED CORRECTLY IN 1996, LATER CHANGED). 2) A SUB-COMPONENT WAS LISTED AS HAVING AN OVERHAUL INSTEAD OF RETIREMENT LIFE. THE ACFT WERE REMOVED FROM SVC, THE COMPONENTS REPLACED AND RECORDS CORRECTED. THE OPERATOR HAS SET UP A SYS FOR PERIODIC AUDITS BY TRAINED PERSONNEL, INCLUDING COMPARING CURRENT COMPUTERIZED RECORDS WITH PREVIOUS PRINTOUTS TO REVEAL UNWARRANTED CHANGES.
