Narrative:
During final approach to jfk, landing gear failed to extend. A missed approach was executed and appropriate checklist procedures were performed as per company aircraft operating manual. An emergency was declared as a precaution and a tower fly-by was done for visual verification of gear down. Landing occurred without incident. Nosewheel steering failed to work so gear pins were installed by maintenance and aircraft was taxied to ramp area. No injuries, damage, or further incidents. Notified appropriate offices of incident. Upon inspection, maintenance found the landing gear handle box assembly malfunctioned gear box assembly needed to be replaced. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a saab 340B and the failure was the gear lever handle box assembly which contains all the switches. The reporter said the landing gear is controled and operated electrically. The reporter said the landing gear was extended using the checklist procedures.

Title: A SAAB 340B ON FINAL APCH AT 2000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND EXECUTED A MISSED APCH DUE TO FAILURE OF THE LNDG GEAR TO EXTEND CAUSED BY A FAILED GEAR LEVER HANDLE BOX ASSEMBLY.
Narrative: DURING FINAL APCH TO JFK, LNDG GEAR FAILED TO EXTEND. A MISSED APCH WAS EXECUTED AND APPROPRIATE CHKLIST PROCS WERE PERFORMED AS PER COMPANY ACFT OPERATING MANUAL. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AS A PRECAUTION AND A TWR FLY-BY WAS DONE FOR VISUAL VERIFICATION OF GEAR DOWN. LNDG OCCURRED WITHOUT INCIDENT. NOSEWHEEL STEERING FAILED TO WORK SO GEAR PINS WERE INSTALLED BY MAINT AND ACFT WAS TAXIED TO RAMP AREA. NO INJURIES, DAMAGE, OR FURTHER INCIDENTS. NOTIFIED APPROPRIATE OFFICES OF INCIDENT. UPON INSPECTION, MAINT FOUND THE LNDG GEAR HANDLE BOX ASSEMBLY MALFUNCTIONED GEAR BOX ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A SAAB 340B AND THE FAILURE WAS THE GEAR LEVER HANDLE BOX ASSEMBLY WHICH CONTAINS ALL THE SWITCHES. THE RPTR SAID THE LNDG GEAR IS CTLED AND OPERATED ELECTRICALLY. THE RPTR SAID THE LNDG GEAR WAS EXTENDED USING THE CHKLIST PROCS.
