Narrative:
On mar/xa/00 at about XY00, I was flying in uncontrolled airspace east of san diego at about 2500 ft in a C152. I was heading north, while trying to orient myself to the area. As I proceeded north, I looked up and saw an airplane about 200 ft in front of my aircraft heading west at my altitude. I took evasive action by turning to the right. I missed the other aircraft by about 100 ft, and then proceeding north and landed at gillespie field. I should have spent more time looking outside the aircraft and not looking inside the aircraft at charts and radios.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C152 PVT PLT GETS LOST DURING A PROPOSED VFR XCOUNTRY FLT FROM MYF TO CXL. HE IS ON A VECTOR TO SEE ARPT AND HAS AN NMAC WITH AN UNIDENTED ACFT AT 2500 FT, 4 MI S OF SEE, CA.
Narrative: ON MAR/XA/00 AT ABOUT XY00, I WAS FLYING IN UNCTLED AIRSPACE E OF SAN DIEGO AT ABOUT 2500 FT IN A C152. I WAS HDG N, WHILE TRYING TO ORIENT MYSELF TO THE AREA. AS I PROCEEDED N, I LOOKED UP AND SAW AN AIRPLANE ABOUT 200 FT IN FRONT OF MY ACFT HDG W AT MY ALT. I TOOK EVASIVE ACTION BY TURNING TO THE R. I MISSED THE OTHER ACFT BY ABOUT 100 FT, AND THEN PROCEEDING N AND LANDED AT GILLESPIE FIELD. I SHOULD HAVE SPENT MORE TIME LOOKING OUTSIDE THE ACFT AND NOT LOOKING INSIDE THE ACFT AT CHARTS AND RADIOS.
