Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 25, I stopped in runup area to finish my pre takeoff checks. I then called tower to tell them I was ready for takeoff while simultaneously taxiing to what I perceived as hold short lines. As I awaited takeoff clearance, I noticed that the hold short lines were in dire need of paint. Then I looked behind me to see the correct 'new' hold short lines. (I was well clear of runway.) at that point, tower cleared me for takeoff, and as I took the runway, they informed me that I had been holding past the new hold short lines. I believe 2 things contributed to this mistake: 1) there were visible lines on ground from the 'old' hold short lines which I mistook for correct ones that just needed paint. 2) the new hold short lines were very far back from runway and I didn't expect that. One other safety factor: tower informed me of my mistake as I was rolling down runway, I then could not fully concentrate on takeoff. Because of this call, if something happened to the airplane at that point, it could have been disastrous.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PVT GA PLT CROSSES PAST THE NEWLY PAINTED RWY MARKING HOLD LINE PLACEMENT FOR RWY 25 AT ORL, FL.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 25, I STOPPED IN RUNUP AREA TO FINISH MY PRE TKOF CHKS. I THEN CALLED TWR TO TELL THEM I WAS READY FOR TKOF WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY TAXIING TO WHAT I PERCEIVED AS HOLD SHORT LINES. AS I AWAITED TKOF CLRNC, I NOTICED THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE IN DIRE NEED OF PAINT. THEN I LOOKED BEHIND ME TO SEE THE CORRECT 'NEW' HOLD SHORT LINES. (I WAS WELL CLR OF RWY.) AT THAT POINT, TWR CLRED ME FOR TKOF, AND AS I TOOK THE RWY, THEY INFORMED ME THAT I HAD BEEN HOLDING PAST THE NEW HOLD SHORT LINES. I BELIEVE 2 THINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS MISTAKE: 1) THERE WERE VISIBLE LINES ON GND FROM THE 'OLD' HOLD SHORT LINES WHICH I MISTOOK FOR CORRECT ONES THAT JUST NEEDED PAINT. 2) THE NEW HOLD SHORT LINES WERE VERY FAR BACK FROM RWY AND I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT. ONE OTHER SAFETY FACTOR: TWR INFORMED ME OF MY MISTAKE AS I WAS ROLLING DOWN RWY, I THEN COULD NOT FULLY CONCENTRATE ON TKOF. BECAUSE OF THIS CALL, IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THE AIRPLANE AT THAT POINT, IT COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS.
