When the captain noticed the aircraft was passing 3800 ft MSL at 3000 FPM, he retarded the thrust levers and announced 'approaching 4000 ft.' the first officer applied forward pressure to the yoke and the ascent was stopped at 4300 ft indicated and the aircraft immediately descended to 4000 ft indicated.
