Narrative:
At XA40 local time tuesday night mar-00, I was told I had approved, bought back, the installation of the auxiliary tank in aircraft xyz incorrectly. The mechanic told me that one of the l-hand tank fittings was touching the forging attached to the floor beam. I had not looked at the clrncs because the tank was being reinstalled following work in the bilge area below the tank. None of the adjustments had been moved and the same hardware was used to reattach the tank. As I got the story, the mechanic that talked to me had installed several of these tanks and knew what was right. He is not the mechanic that installed this tank. The knowledgeable mechanic told his supervisor but did not write a report or non routine card. The supervisor then told the next shift supervisor but did not include situation in written turnover. No action was taken and the area closed up. The mechanic that talked to me told me his supervisor was angry and said 'I'm going to pursue this.'
