Narrative:
Possible violation los angeles flight rules area. I did not announce on 128.55 upon entering the area, I only monitored. After leaving special flight rules area, I did not call socal approach. I called vny tower and received a transponder squawk and was told to make straight-in to runway 34L. When I arrived I was informed of my mistake. Possible causes: 1) unfamiliar with area. 2) mistuning to vny ATIS. 3) told by instructor that I could not use my LORAN or GPS. 4) not being told of destination before takeoff.
