Narrative:
It was the first officer's leg. The clearance we received and briefed was runway heading direct rbv. Navigation radios were set on both sides to rbv. When tower cleared us onto hold they changed our clearance to: left turn direct yardley. This change was given during the line-up checklist and although it was verbally read back it was not mentally acknowledged. After being cleared for takeoff, the first officer turned right direct rbv as originally cleared. Before I could realize the mistake we switched frequencys to phl departure and he questioned our position. This is when I realized we did not follow the revised takeoff clearance and the first officer was flying the original clearance. We apologized for the error and were told no action would be taken. I think the major contributing factor to this deviation was the fact that tower changed our clearance after we were cleared onto the runway and while we were performing the line-up check. That distraction allowed the confirmation of the new clearance to be overlooked and therefore not acknowledged by both crew members. To ensure this never happens again, I will, in the future, make sure before the takeoff is commenced that both crew members know the correct clearance and both agree it is correct.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LATE, ON THE RWY, DEP CLRNC WAS GIVEN. AFTER TKOF, THE FLC FLEW THE ORIGINAL CLRNC UNTIL QUERIED BY THE CTLR ABOUT THE RTE.
Narrative: IT WAS THE FO'S LEG. THE CLRNC WE RECEIVED AND BRIEFED WAS RWY HDG DIRECT RBV. NAV RADIOS WERE SET ON BOTH SIDES TO RBV. WHEN TWR CLRED US ONTO HOLD THEY CHANGED OUR CLRNC TO: L TURN DIRECT YARDLEY. THIS CHANGE WAS GIVEN DURING THE LINE-UP CHKLIST AND ALTHOUGH IT WAS VERBALLY READ BACK IT WAS NOT MENTALLY ACKNOWLEDGED. AFTER BEING CLRED FOR TKOF, THE FO TURNED R DIRECT RBV AS ORIGINALLY CLRED. BEFORE I COULD REALIZE THE MISTAKE WE SWITCHED FREQS TO PHL DEP AND HE QUESTIONED OUR POS. THIS IS WHEN I REALIZED WE DID NOT FOLLOW THE REVISED TKOF CLRNC AND THE FO WAS FLYING THE ORIGINAL CLRNC. WE APOLOGIZED FOR THE ERROR AND WERE TOLD NO ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN. I THINK THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THIS DEV WAS THE FACT THAT TWR CHANGED OUR CLRNC AFTER WE WERE CLRED ONTO THE RWY AND WHILE WE WERE PERFORMING THE LINE-UP CHK. THAT DISTR ALLOWED THE CONFIRMATION OF THE NEW CLRNC TO BE OVERLOOKED AND THEREFORE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH CREW MEMBERS. TO ENSURE THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN, I WILL, IN THE FUTURE, MAKE SURE BEFORE THE TKOF IS COMMENCED THAT BOTH CREW MEMBERS KNOW THE CORRECT CLRNC AND BOTH AGREE IT IS CORRECT.
