Narrative:
We were on a vector for visual approach runway 36L at tpa. Our traffic was a B737. We picked up the B737 and were cleared for the visual. As I turned final, I picked up a visual on another B737 about 2.5 mi in front of me. Either there were 2 aircraft on final and I picked up the wrong aircraft, or the aircraft that I was following made a significant speed reduction and caught me off guard, either way, it was not comfortable. A traffic conflict did not occur (our aircraft was non TCASII) but it was very humbling to realize I picked up the wrong traffic. I was flying with a part time pilot and he also picked up the wrong aircraft.
