Narrative:

During cruise flight at FL310 with autoplt engaged, noticed flickering of 'elevator low pressure' light followed by illumination of 'system a' hydraulic low pressure lights. First officer continued flying while the captain and so performed the checklist for 'hydraulic leak or loss' and the 'loss of hydraulic system a follow up' checklist. An emergency was declared with ZAB and after discussion with the flight dispatcher and maintenance control, the crew elected to divert into elp. A straight in approach was flown by the captain with alternate extension of the gear and flaps. The aircraft was stopped on the runway and towed to the gate due to the lack of nosewheel steering. Maintenance investigation revealed a hydraulic leak from the lower rudder power unit.

Narrative: DURING CRUISE FLT AT FL310 WITH AUTOPLT ENGAGED, NOTICED FLICKERING OF 'ELEVATOR LOW PRESSURE' LIGHT FOLLOWED BY ILLUMINATION OF 'SYS A' HYD LOW PRESSURE LIGHTS. FO CONTINUED FLYING WHILE THE CAPT AND SO PERFORMED THE CHKLIST FOR 'HYD LEAK OR LOSS' AND THE 'LOSS OF HYD SYS A FOLLOW UP' CHKLIST. AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH ZAB AND AFTER DISCUSSION WITH THE FLT DISPATCHER AND MAINT CTL, THE CREW ELECTED TO DIVERT INTO ELP. A STRAIGHT IN APCH WAS FLOWN BY THE CAPT WITH ALTERNATE EXTENSION OF THE GEAR AND FLAPS. THE ACFT WAS STOPPED ON THE RWY AND TOWED TO THE GATE DUE TO THE LACK OF NOSEWHEEL STEERING.
