Narrative:

In climb phase, level at FL230 in step climb, loud thump, yaw, aircraft vibration noticeable throughout aircraft. No engine indications, no ECAM warnings, followed 3-4 mins later by second same very loud thump, yaw and vibration. Passenger noted flames out of #2 engine. Compressor stalls from #2 engine. No change in engine instruments, no ECAM warnings, no loss of power. Decision to rtb (return to blocks) divert, return to mem, declared emergency, briefed crew and passenger thoroughly, burned down on descent/approach. Made overweight landing at 154800 pounds, light touchdown. Had equipment standing by, normal taxi to gate. Passenger deplaned normally.
