Narrative:
On takeoff roll, at approximately 90 KTS, a loud 'pop' sound was heard. Captain (PNF) observed #1 engine indications fluctuating then decreasing. There was no fire or overheat warning. Captain rejected takeoff, stopping on runway. First officer contacted tower and requested crash fire rescue equipment vehicles. Pas were advised to remain seated. Flight attendant was contacted and advised to inspect left engine. Nothing unusual reported. Engine was shut down using QRH 'engine fire, severe damage' checklist. Airport crash fire rescue equipment reported no visible hazard. After consulting QRH 'brake cooling' chart, we taxied back to the gate with airport crash fire rescue equipment following. Passenger deplaned normally, flight canceled. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter said maintenance found turbine section failure. It was contained.
