Narrative:
Misread chart for J518. Instead of balance 300 degrees, was using EMI 300 degrees. ATC queried if we were cleared J518 and we said yes. Looking at chart, due to closeness on chart of EMI and balance and with magenta line and identify line, we flew EMI 300 degrees for J518 (both pilots interpreted same thing). Supplemental information from acn 469156: EMI misleadingly appears to be balance VOR on chart.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLC MISREADS THEIR CHART AND INTERCEPTS THE 300 DEG RADIAL OF EMI FOR J211 INSTEAD OF THE 300 DEG RADIAL OF BAL, J518, UNDER CTL OF ZDC, VA.
Narrative: MISREAD CHART FOR J518. INSTEAD OF BAL 300 DEGS, WAS USING EMI 300 DEGS. ATC QUERIED IF WE WERE CLRED J518 AND WE SAID YES. LOOKING AT CHART, DUE TO CLOSENESS ON CHART OF EMI AND BAL AND WITH MAGENTA LINE AND IDENT LINE, WE FLEW EMI 300 DEGS FOR J518 (BOTH PLTS INTERPED SAME THING). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 469156: EMI MISLEADINGLY APPEARS TO BE BAL VOR ON CHART.
