Narrative:

Aircraft was parked on ramp, about 300 yards from the gate to be used. Ground handlers hooked up the tug to repos the aircraft to the gate. Tug driver asked for brake release. I did so and he began the repos. I assumed that either we would remain clear of the taxiway or that the tug driver would notify me if not. As it turns out, we did get pushed onto an active taxiway. I did not call ground for a clearance and neither did the tug driver call, or ask me to call. I should have verified with the tug driver where exactly we were getting pushed to.
