Narrative:
Leaving parking for runway 24L, we were instructed to taxi on taxiway Q1. We mistook it for taxiway Q and ended up head-to-head with an airliner. I remembered Q and Q1, coming in, and questioned my copilot, who had more experience at lax, but I should have been more assertive. Q1 was not lit, at least where we could see it properly (airport fault). Ground could not see us or was not monitoring us (ATC fault). At this point, we were not certain if we were on the wrong taxiway or not. We exited Q to Q1, at a crossway and continued on. Unless the airliner queried ATC on another frequency, we never heard any comment.
